Chinese New Year in Careyes
Year of the Tiger

by Marcela Aguilar y Maya

Traditions are what a community is made of, and in Careyes the celebration of the Chinese New Year has been a punctual date for the past 36 years, when Gian Franco Brignone and Andrés Yanomé, decided that it was to be celebrated in this hemisphere with the same lavishness as in the East.

Fireworks, drums, processions featuring the animal sign of each new year, together with margaritas, ponchos and sombreros, the careyes Chinese New Year is nothing short of a magnificent celebration where people from all the corners of the world meet.

After a marvelous dinner extravaganza, the celebration begins with those born on the year commemorated, -this year is the sign of the Tiger- called to the palapa podium to receive their colorful jorongo, a different one for every sign. Then the procession featuring a large papier-maché sculpture of the year´s animal carried by local caballeros, along with amazing fireworks, lights up the night.

This year Alvaro Manzano was in charge of the organization, party décor and dining buffet, in the most outstanding Chinese Style: lanterns, banners with Chinese quotes, and of course tiger decorations. The most exquisite site, Playa Rosa left its traditional pink for a night to glow in red and host the most diverse and amazing crowd.
